My response:
It is doubtful whether today's educators actually emphasize on finding out the wishes of the students concerning the curriculum. There is no general consensus of what the uses of education are, but one of which is to satisfy the various needs of the society. It appears that education is heading to a state that its main purpose is merely to serve the community. What is truly beneficial to students' development seems to be overshadowed. For example, students today are kind of being forced to take as many courses for vocational training as, if not more than, to learn the pure knowledge developed by their previous generations. It is sad that such an imbalanced development is damaging students' ability to appreciate the world and people around them, since they became so ignorant of the world outside of their own field. If educators really spend a considerable effort to find out what the students themselves need, but not what the society needs, it should not be difficult to conclude that generally, the present curriculum does not satisfy the quest for knowledge for most students.
I agree that it is the educators' duty to determine the curriculum that can strike a balance between social development and individual development. Most students are just too young and too inexperienced to determine what is truly best for them. It would be extremely helpful if the educators can lend a helping hand to guide their development. It is through this guidance that knowledge can be passed from one generation to the next. That says, the educators should not try to satisfy every wish of the students. For example, if all of a sudden the majority of students are so fond of magic, that they think it is to their best interests to become magicians. Undoubtedly, such nonsense requests are to be ignored.
However, the students cannot take everything that is presented to them for granted. It is also their duty to explore, to find out what their interests and specialties are. They also have to keep in mind that they are the future of the society, that it will be their duty to lead the world to a brighter future. To do this, it is not enough for them to just limiting themselves to the curriculum. The curriculum should be set in a way that the students would find it an eye-opening experience that they are willing to explore on their own.
In summary, I think there is large room for both educators and students to improve. Each party needs to redefine their role so as to guarantee continual development of the society.
